Playa Carrillo is the perfect choice for a relaxing vacation in a stunning setting. The beach is one of the most beautiful in Costa Rica and the village and surrounding area are still genuine and not spoilt by mass tourism. Our house, Casa Sevana, is located in a very quiet and green area of the small village of Carrillo, just minutes on foot from the beach, restaurants and grocery stores. It sits on a bluff overlooking Carrillo Bay and Cape and the Pacific Ocean.
The house was finished in December 2007. It is a work of love, designed by the architect/owner. Its style is Scandinavian contemporary and modern, with much attention to detail and an emphasis on the use of local hardwood in ceilings, furniture and cabinets, all built by a master carpenter. It has two floors, each with a large terrace. All the rooms open up towards the view of the garden, the pool and the ocean.
The house measures 1935 square feet (180m2), of which 430 square feet (40m2) are terrace areas. The beds in the bedrooms sleep 5 persons. Arrangements can be made for 3 more persons; 1 in any of the bedrooms (extra single bed) and 2 on the the living room couch (can be made into a 4'-2" (1.25m) wide double bed).
The ground floor has a large entrance, two bedrooms, a spacious bathroom, a laundry room and a terrace. The main bedroom has a queen-sized bed and the second bedroom has two single beds. All the linens are high-quality cotton and the beds all have handmade patchwork bedspreads. The bedrooms have good reading lights, generous closet, drawer and desk spaces. They are equipped with A/Cs and ceiling fans and they have large sliding glass doors that give access to the terrace, the swimming pool and the ocean view beyond.
The open and spacious second floor – with 14 foot (4.2 meters) high teak cathedral ceilings, natural ventilation and ceiling fans – has a fully equipped kitchen that opens to the airy dining/living space and the upper terrace, where you have an even better view. Here you can enjoy breakfast while watching a multitude of colorful tropical birds fly past, catch a family of howler monkeys swinging by in the tree crowns below or simply relax in the evening as the sun sets over the cape. On this level there is also the third bedroom, with a single bed and A/C, and the second full bathroom.
The house is furnished with attractive contemporary furniture. It is fully screened and equipped with TVs, iPod dock, CD player, DVD player, phones, high speed wireless internet connection (using your own laptop), safes for valuables, hairdryer, washer and dryer. The kitchen is fully equipped and all the linens, bath and beach towels are included. (The full list of what the house offers is below.)
The tropical garden has a sparkling pool that allows you to cool off or even swim laps. It is 25 foot long (7.6 meters) and the depth is between 4 and 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters). (Please keep depth in mind if you have small children.) There is an outdoor shower, a gazebo with a charcoal brick grill and a sink, large lawn areas and lots of flowers and trees offering color and privacy by the pool. The property is fully fenced and has parking space for two cars.
Our local agent speaks excellent English. She takes care of all the practicalities related to the house. The house will be cleaned before and after your visit and on a weekly basis for longer stays. (More frequent maid service can be arranged for.) A team comes in and takes care of the garden every two weeks and the pool is cleaned twice a week.
The Beach, the Village & Beyond
The fabulous Playa Carrillo - less than 0.5 miles (750 meters) from the house - is unspoiled with no buildings in sight, white sand, clear and calm water as well as palm trees that offer welcomed shade. The bay is protected by a reef and is perfect for kids. There is good snorkeling at both ends of the beach. The 1.5 miles (2.5 km) long beach is never crowded. On weekdays you will share it with maybe 30 other persons. There are more people on weekends and especially during Christmas, New Years and Easter holidays. But take a look at the photo below. It was taken during Easter week … The beach is well maintained by the municipality. They are doing a good job cleaning it, actually much better than in Sámara, which is part of a different municipality.

The village of Puerto Carrillo is located off the beach, east of Carrillo Bay. It has a mixed population of locals and expatriates with about 500 permanent residents. Carrillo offers restaurants, basic food shopping, some shops, a tour operator, a car rental and even a small zoo. The main attraction is of course the beach but one can also hike in the nearby mango plantations, go sport fishing or horseback riding up the hills, among other things. This is what Wikipedia says about Carrillo.
Sámara – 4 miles away (7 km) – is slightly bigger, but still only a small town. Here you can surf the waves of the bay, go on a canopy tour, do yoga or get a massage. There are also more shops and restaurants as well as banks, internet cafés, more car rentals, some nightlife and – if needed – a doctor or a dentist. If you feel ambitious, you can also sign up for Spanish classes at the excellent language school.
It is convenient to rent a car, but it is possible to manage without one. We are only a 2-3 minute walk from the main street with restaurants, grocery stores and the local bus stop with buses several times a day to Sámara and to the larger town of Nicoya. The beach is less than a 10 minute walk away. In addition, there are taxis, daily buses to San José and bus links to several major tourist destinations.
